How to Polish Your Contemporary Silver Jewellery

Is your contemporary silver jewellery looking a little dull? This guide talks you through the best ways to polish and clean your jewellery pieces

Contemporary Silver Jewellery

If you have treated yourself to a lovely piece of contemporary silver jewellery or somebody has bought you it as a special gift, it’s important to know exactly how to care for it and clean it so that it lasts as long as possible and doesn’t lose its shine. Polishing silver jewellery is recommended at least once every couple of months to remove any build-up of dust and dirt and keep your pieces clean and sparkling.

Why Silver Jewellery Needs to Be Polished

Since all silver-plated jewellery becomes tarnished at some point, regular cleaning is important to make sure that it stays in top condition. The chemicals from daily wear and the exposed layer of silver react with the air, which can change the colour of your contemporary silver jewellery piece – a sure sign that you need to start polishing.

How to Clean Your Pieces

Lightly cleaning your contemporary silver jewellery pieces is a simple process. Start by mixing a small amount of mild washing up liquid with lukewarm water in a small bowl. Then, dip a cloth into the soapy water and use it to gently scrub at the surface of your jewellery whilst keeping it submerged. Be careful not to scrub too hard, as you don’t want to damage your piece. The whole process should take around ten minutes before you dry the piece with a clean, dry cloth. If you repeat this process with your silver jewellery once every couple of weeks, it will stay in good condition.

Deep Cleaning

At times, you may have to give a silver jewellery piece a deeper clean, perhaps as the result of a build-up over a long period of time or a change in colour. To deep clean your jewellery pieces, start by lining the bottom of a small bowl with aluminium foil before placing salt and baking soda in the bowl and adding hot water. Then, place your jewellery piece in this mixture for ten minutes, ensuring that it is sitting at the bottom, on the aluminium foil. You will see the black or yellow flakes start to break off into the water as your jewellery is cleaned.

Knowing how to look after your silver jewellery is essential to keeping it in the best condition.
