The Chester Mark is Back!

The Chester Assay Office closed its doors in 1962. From this date, the Town Mark of three wheatsheaves and a sword in a shaped shield have remained dormant. Although no longer a hallmark, the Town Mark can be added alongside our current hallmark, separated by a double space to avoid confusion. Lucy Quartermaine has chosen to add the Chester Town Mark to her Jewellery, representing her heritage and paying homage to the  this amazing city, the place she calls home and has chosen to raise her own family. The Lucy Quartermaine brand is based in Chester and proud of the history of both the Chester Assay Office and Hallmarking.

"I was delighted to host Lucy Quartermaine and her team at the Assay Office. I think it was an excellent opportunity to showcase what we do and how we perform the assaying and hallmarking of their work. The team was really engaged and also met the staff who look after their articles."
Ashley M. Carson
Sheffield Assay Master

The mark can be seen on the left and pieces will start to receive the mark by the end of 2022.

The mark is based on the Chester Coat of Arms which can be spotted all over the city! Next time you're out and about Chester keep an eye out for it! There are more than you think!
